Dorchester County Overview
Dorchester County Sheriff's Office Records
The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office in Cambridge is the primary law enforcement agency for the county. It handles arrests, patrols, and law enforcement service across the county's largely rural and waterfront areas. Records requests for incidents handled by the Sheriff's Office should be directed to their office in Cambridge. You can submit a written request under the Maryland Public Information Act either in person or by mail.
Cambridge also has its own police department that handles incidents within the city limits. If your search involves a specific incident in Cambridge, you may want to contact the Cambridge Police Department separately, since that agency holds its own records. The two agencies do not automatically share records with each other. Outside of Cambridge, the Sheriff's Office is typically the agency you would contact.
Dorchester County covers a large geographic area with many small communities. Law enforcement response in those outer areas is primarily through the Sheriff's Office, though the Maryland State Police also operates in the county and holds separate records for incidents they handle.
Maryland Judiciary Case Search for Dorchester County
The Maryland Judiciary Case Search is a free, statewide tool that covers the Dorchester County Circuit Court and District Court, both located in Cambridge. You do not need an account to search, and there is no fee to use the system.
Since December 2021, default searches require exact name matches. To search broadly, add a percent sign at the end of the last name. So searching "Thomas%" returns cases where the last name begins with "Thomas." This is especially useful when you are not sure of the exact spelling. Expunged and shielded records are not visible in the system, so the absence of a result does not necessarily mean no case was ever filed. Select "Dorchester" in the county filter to limit results to local courts.
Case Search shows charge descriptions, case numbers, court dates, and outcomes. For older cases or for the actual documents filed in a case, you would need to contact the Circuit Court or District Court clerk's office in Cambridge. Some older records are archived and may not be immediately accessible without advance notice.
Requesting Arrest Records Under MPIA
The Maryland Public Information Act (General Provisions Title 4) gives you the right to request public records from any Maryland government agency. For Dorchester County, that includes the Sheriff's Office, the Cambridge Police Department, and any other local agency that holds arrest or incident records. Agencies have 10 working days to respond. They must provide the records, deny the request in writing with a reason, or tell you more time is needed. Denied requests must include appeal instructions.
The first two hours of staff time for your request are free. Beyond that, fees may apply under COMAR 29.01.02.13. Write your request clearly. Include the person's full name, the approximate date of the arrest or incident, the type of record you need, and your contact information. If you are the subject of the record, note that since your rights are broader under the MPIA than a third-party requestor. The Maryland AG's MPIA Manual explains the full framework, including what agencies are allowed to withhold and why.

Maryland State Police in Dorchester County
The Maryland State Police operates in Dorchester County and handles certain arrests, accident investigations, and other law enforcement activity, particularly on state roads and highways running through the county. If you are looking for records from a state police incident, those records are held by MSP, not the county Sheriff's Office. MSP Central Records is at 1711 Belmont Ave, Baltimore, MD 21244, phone (410) 653-4246, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The MSP online PIA page is available if you prefer to submit your request digitally.
MSP does not share its records with the Sheriff's Office automatically. If you need records from both agencies for the same incident, you would submit two separate requests. That can take longer, but it is the only way to get the full record when multiple agencies were involved.

The DPSCS Inmate Locator lets you search for people incarcerated in Maryland state prisons. If someone was arrested in Dorchester County and later sentenced and moved to a state facility, they should appear here. The search is free and does not require an account. You can search by name or DPSCS ID number.
This tool does not cover the Dorchester County Detention Center. People held there pre-trial or serving local sentences are not in the DPSCS system. Contact the Sheriff's Office or detention center directly for those inquiries.
